550k in unpaid debts owed by public officials in Grand Str COLUMBIA, SC (WMBF) A recent report from the South Carolina Ethics Commission shows more than $3 million in related fines and penalties is due to the citizens of South Carolina and more than $550,000 is owed by politicians and organizations from the Grand Strand and Pee Dee regions."The Department will use all available methods to hold ethics violators responsible for unpaid debts," said Rick Reames III, Director of the South Carolina Department of Revenue. "This joint effort with the South Carolina Ethics Commission makes government more accountable to the public."The South Carolina Department of Revenue has teamed up with the South Carolina Ethics Commission to launch an initiative to boost collection efforts and force accountability for ethics violations, according to a news release from the South Carolina Department of Revenue.The initiative is part of recent improvements to the South Carolina Department of Revenue Setoff Debt and Governmental Enterprise Accounts Receivable (GEAR) collections programs.These programs allow the South Carolina Department of Revenue to collect debts due to state agencies and other government entities."We applaud the Department of Revenue's increased efforts and attention," said Jim Warren, Chair of the South Carolina Ethics Commission.
